Johnnie Geathers, MSW,LSW

Johnnie Geathers, MSW, LSW is an individual that loves to help others. His love for helping others began when he was a teenager volunteering and working at different organizations. His experiences led him wanting to learn more about how individuals act based on his personal experiences. After graduating high school, Johnnie attended The Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate studies. During his undergraduate experience, he served two terms as an AmeriCorps member to help run summer camp youth programs for EducationWorks in Philadelphia, PA. He was the Diversity chair for the Association of Residence Hall Students (ARHS) on Penn State’s campus to increase diversity awareness among the student population. Johnnie received his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies in May 2011.

After receiving his Bachelor's degree from Penn State, he went on to attend The University of Pittsburgh for his graduate studies. During his graduate tenure, Johnnie learned more about what he wanted to do in terms of his professional career. From his field practicums working with teens at an afterschool program at the YMCA and working with adults with co-occurring disorders in a partial hospitalization program at Mercy Behavioral Health, his interests in therapy came to life. Johnnie received his Master’s in Social Work under the Direct Practice concentration along with receiving a Children, Youth and Families certificate in April 2013. In May 

Johnnie worked with numerous organizations and agencies in the Greater Pittsburgh area as a therapist providing services for children and families. Currently, he is a Mental Health Therapist for HandinHand Counseling Services, LLC. Along with his work, he does monthly mental health memoirs for his church, The Church of Christian Compassion in Philadelphia, PA. On April 3, 2020, Johnnie launched a platform called JG Mental Health Fridays where he addresses different situations that individuals face and provides coping exercises that anyone can do. JG Mental Health Fridays videos are shared on his social media platforms and on YouTube. From there, Johnnie have been speaking on different platforms from classrooms to podcasts. Johnnie stepped it up in his career by writing articles for Helpful Living Magazine to increase mental health awareness.

Outside of his professional career, he became a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.  in Fall 2009 through the Eta Alpha chapter at The Pennsylvania State University. Currently, he is with the Beta Omicron Omega Alumni chapter in Pittsburgh, PA. In the fraternity, he held numerous positions on a local, regional and national level. He helped co-founded Much More Than A Hashtag, a collaborative initiative with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. where both organizations educate the community on Voter Registration, Citizen Review Board, Jury Selection, Home Ownership and Property Taxes. Currently, Johnnie is the Secretary & Community Service chair for the Beta Omicron Omega Alumni chapter, the Director of Community Service for the Atlantic Coast Region, and the National Coordinator of TIME (Thetamen Improving through Mental Empowerment), a new initiative that focuses on Mental Health, Legal Wellness, and Financial Wellness of individuals. Johnnie is involved with Pitt Social Work Alumni Council and Ja'Quan Lavender Foundation. Johnnie finds a way to stay in touch and involved in the community any way possible.
